This pisses me off

Post by BunBun<3 on Sat Oct 09, 2010 10:45 pm

OICA

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.

Stop the Internet Blacklist
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-segal/stop-the-internet-blackli_b_739836.html

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition
DemandProgress.org - Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist!

Update: Also for US citizens, you can email your Senator from the following link and tell him or her your concerns about this bill
http://demandprogress.org/blacklist/

Tell Your Senator: No Website Blacklists, No Internet Censorship!
https://secure.eff.org/site/Advocacy?page=UserActionInactive&id=455

Update, from EFF's website: the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed the scheduled markup of the Internet censorship bill — a fantastic outcome, given that the entertainment industry and their allies in Congress had hoped this bill would be quickly approved before the Senators went home for the October recess. Massive thanks to all who used the EFF Action Center to write to your Senators to oppose this bill.

I've already done the same as Boyo starting three days ago. What they're thinking is of routing everything through centralized hubs. Invasion of privacy in every meaning of the word.

so if someone hacked this hub and monitored this traffic then someone could steal millions of identities at once fucking dumb asses they are just asking for trouble

do you know that the pirate bay owners the people who were charged in their appeal they have interrogated the people who "found how their system works" have no idea how a p2p network works

Lol, no. That's news to me. Funny as hellz though. Very Happy

Nah, you need to look at it in a different light. When or if this passes, they will have the ability to lock down the net entirely. Simply by shutting down the hubs. Claiming a crash, or whatever cover story. While they quietly eliminate the sector that's causing them problems. Total area blackout.

What's the goal in all of this? Snooping on everyone, every moment of the day? Trying to find dirt on everyone to fill the prisons? Which in this country, are the only legal form of slavery. Read the 4th Ammendment for background.

Whose to say that they couldn't hack your system easily and have an illegal look inside your house via your own webcam? Seriously, w/ the new GPU based encryption cracking their developing. Most p-words would fall in a matter of minutes to a simple dictionary attack.

Really, read between the lines on this plan of theirs. Where can this be going, and what is the real agenda behind what they're claiming? Trust them? Uhhhhh, HELL NO! I think they've proven repeatedly they cannot be trusted. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, true that. Though, that which is in my siggy belongs to me. It tends to open eyes, and bring some caring right quick, fast, and in a hurry. If this passes, it's time to head to Central or South America, and woe unto them that get in my way.

This is what will happen, because of the current outrage. They'll back down a few notches, wait for another shocking event (possibly even "help" it along a bit). Then say "Well, if you'd put this in place. It would'nt have happened." Then John Q. Public, bunch of numbskulls they are. They will clamor for the the things that they opposed so heartily now. Bunch of damned sheep, running right off the cliff when someone stamps their foot.

Example? Look back prior to 9/11/01. Then look how much freedom we lost afterwards. All in the name of safety? What safety? Makes one wonder why no one took action w/ all the prior knowlege of their plans. Maybe, just maybe, what happened after to our freedom was the plan all along. What a joke.

Also, it'll never happen in other countries that are'nt really on their side. Amazing how much the U.S. is acting like those fruitcakes at the U.N. isn't it?

Censoring the internet... what a stupid idea.

After all, the internet IS a tool, is it not? Just like any tool, it can be abused. Someone could easily take a screwdriver and butcher some poor sap. Does that mean we should censor screwdrivers?

Yep. In layman`s terms, Government doesn`t want, internet won`t have anymore. And why the whole internet? Not everybody cares enough to bypass censors. I don`t want some political nutcase to the south of my position to delete any of the websites I go on. But, if that law were passed, I bet that for every major site that goes down, tons more will pop up. So basically, they`re just making the internet more inconvienient to use. Hurray for ingenuity.

The way you put it, it sounds like my public school Razz

They blocked every website except those that could be references for research. So all mail clients (except google docs, windows skydrive is blocked, dropbox is unblocked), porn, social (all forums, blogs, facebook, myspace), and all websites for buying stuff online (except amazon).

At my private school, porn is blocked.

If this law ever passes, either everybody will leave the internet and develop and use meshnet, or everybody will try to liberate the internet.
