Tutorial: dual booting

Post by nfkiller on Fri May 15, 2009 5:50 am

dual booting is running 2 operating systems on one computer and im gunna tell you how Smile

step 1: get the cd for the operating system you want to dual boot

step 2: open your start menu and right click on "computer"

step 3: choose "manage" then when computer management pops up double click storage and then click disk management

step 4: in the bottem of the window there should be a bunch of boxes with letters and stuff in them, right click on the one that has the most space (probobly going to be your C drive) and select shrink volume

step 5: pick the amout of hard drive space you want to let your dual booted operating system have (in megabytes) i would put something like 20gb

step 6: put your boot CD for the operating system you want to dual boot into your cd drive into your computer and turn it off

step 7: open your BIOS or quickboot menu (on dells press f12) and select CD drive

step 8: install your operating system on the drive that you just created (it will be the one that has exactly how much space you picked it to have)

step 9: done Smile

EDIT: if you are using XP or something other than vista you can use free partitioning software such as this one http://www.ranish.com/part/

na it doesnt but there is open source software that can do it for ya.

Also when you buy your computer you can tell the manufacturer that you would like an extra partition on your computer.

windows 7 uses the base of vista and has just been striped and redone to make it alot more precise and sharp (faster) but theres not much point using it atm unless you have two systems and want to test stuff, wait for the final release.
